dunley manor 7811

Postby richard swindells » Fri Jul 23, 2010 8:11 pm

As a boy in the early sixties my train spotting was confined to the gas works bridge and the old works bridge, and also peeping into the works via the ventilation pipes located on the shelf bank side.. ( remember seeing the count and countess from wllr under going some sort of repair or restoration ) i can recall most of the manors shedded in the area coming or going , all except dunley manor it was shedded at coleham and was known to haul the cambrian coast express on a few occasions, can anyone recall this loco in oswestry or even better a photograph.
at the age i was about eleven, i thought the manors just about the greatest loco,s, all green and brass, but now i realize that the ivatt 2 mt,s and the br standard 75000 class had just as much going for them as my beloved manors.
so to sum up can anyone confirm 7811 in oswestry. or was i at the wrong bridge at the wrong time, or peeping down the wrong pipe . many thank rs

Afraid I can't confirm it being in Oswestry, but a quick Google finds the RCTS offering a picture of 7811 at Welshpool in late Sep.1960 (http://www.rcts.org.uk/images/uploads/SteamB.pdf). As it was shedded at Shrewsbury at this time it puts it damn close to Oswestry :geek:

a photo exists of 7811 pulling south out of chester, heading for shrewsbury, looking in a very sad state, hence it must have passed through gobowen, that puts it even closer than welshpool , talking of gobowen the other manor that eluded me was (odney manor). when i was allowed to venture a little further from home. a saturday trip on the flyer down to gobowen became a regular event, odney pulled in running light from shrewsbury. made my day even thoe halls castles and counties had either sped through or dropped passengers..here,s another little item thats been drawn from my memory after seeing brittania class (firth of forth) in oswestry on the photo topics page, what does (70026 polar star) and oswestry, anyone any memorys, ...?

many thanks for all the replys regarding ( 7811 dunley manor ) looks to be the only locally shedded manor not to be recorded in oswestry.
on one of my replys i mentioned brittania class ( 70026 polar star ) and had anyone any memory of its visit to oswestry. its is supposed to have visited by way of the whitchurch line pushing or pulling county class locomotive in for repair i saw the county class in the works south yard next day. my father had told me of 70026 perched on the old accomodation lane bridge, now unicorn road whilst returning from is job as a civilian instructer at the park hall camp, late one aug/ sep 63 or 64.
he explained about the ( wind shields ) as he put it, and the name on them.. (polar star) ...?
i of course rushed for my bike and set off full off the sure thing of seeing a britt. !! i didnt see it !! a mr owen who lived close to us and worked in the works/shed relayed to me when asked if he had any info.. your to late its returned to crewe.
but he did say that it had caused quite an interest with local shed and works staff, being a loco well out of its manor so to speak, and also the county class whose name i cannot recall..some of the lacal lads had had wind of it also but failed to see it. so thats it .
