Thank you for your interest in our courses. These notes are intended to give you an idea what to expect, the terms and conditions of the course, and how to proceed to book a course.

By the end of the course you should understand better:

  • Safe Railway practice.
  • The function of the main controls.
  • How to move off.
  • How to stop the locomotive, under control, at the required spot.

Form of the course:

  • Running up and down the line - at least 6 runs.
  • Communication between the loco crew and others.
  • You will be driving or observing each session.

The course will start at 10:00 and end about 16:00. and a buffet lunch is included.

Clothing:

It is a good idea to wear old clothes, but no protective clothing is required.

Booking terms and conditions.

  • 2012 courses cost £80 (or £50 for the half-day course), which must be paid in advance.
  • Candidates must normally be between the ages of 18 and 75 years, fit and in good health.
  • Courses are offered subject to availability.
  • The published course content may have to be changed to suit the candidate mix, weather etc. on the day.
  • You will be given a tentative course date when full payment is received.
  • If we are not able to run a course on the date for which you have been given tentative booking, you will be given a new tentative course date at least 28 days in advance.
  • Your booking will be confirmed at least 28 days in advance.
  • A refund of 80% will be given for cancellations of Tentative Bookings.
  • No refund will be given if Confirmed Bookings are cancelled.
  • Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate requests to change course dates after confirmation; the railway reserves the right to request an administrative charge of £20.
  • Should the Railway cancel the course, a full refund will be given to the purchaser or an acceptable alternative date offered to the candidate.

 

  • The “candidate” is the person who will be undertaking the course.
  • The “purchaser” is the person who is paying for the course.
  • The “Railway” is Cambrian Heritage Railways.

There are no prerequisites to taking part in our driver experience days. Candidates should be aware that the day will be quite strenuous and we ask that you are certain that you are fit enough to spend the day carrying out fairly physical activities in the confined space of the cab.
