Thank you for your interest in our courses. These notes are intended to give you an idea what to expect and the terms and conditions of the course. Please read these before booking.

By the end of the course you should understand better:

  • Safe Railway practice.
  • The function of the main controls.
  • How to move off.
  • How to stop the locomotive, under control, at the required spot.

Form of the course:

  • Running up and down the line - at least 6 runs.
  • Shunting and shunting safety.
  • Operation of the points.
  • Communication between the train crew and others.
  • You may share the day with another candidate.

The course will start at 10:00 and end about 16:00. and a buffet lunch is included.

Clothing:

You will need to wear old clothes, overalls if possible, protective gloves and strong boots or shoes - steel capped are best.

Booking terms and conditions.

  • Candidates must, normally, be between the ages of 18 and 75 years, fit and in good health.
  • Courses are offered according to availability.
  • The published course content may have to be altered to suit the candidate mix, weather etc. on the day.
  • You will be given a Provisional course date when full payment is received.
  • You may change a Provisional date as many times as you like for up to a year. After this you will need to renew your membership fee - currently £12 pa for an adult.
  • If we are not able to run a course on the date for which you have been given a Provisional booking you will be given a new date at least 28 days in advance.
  • Your booking will be confirmed at least 28 days in advance.
  • A refund of 80% will be given if you cancel your course.
  • We will try to change a Confirmed date if you cannot attend, but only if someone fills your place. There will be a £20 administration fee to cover this. If no-one can take your place your fee may be lost.
  • No refund will be given if a Confirmed Booking is cancelled by you.
  • Should the Railway cancel a course, a full refund will be given to the purchaser or an acceptable alternative date offered to the candidate.
  • The “candidate” is the person who will be undertaking the course.
  • The “purchaser” is the person who is paying for the course.
  • The “Railway” is the Cambrian Railways Trust.

There are no prerequisites to taking part in our driver experience days. Candidates should be aware that the day will be quite strenuous and we ask that you are certain that you are fit enough to spend the day carrying out fairly physical activities in the confined space of the cab.
